Dr. Tagide deCarvalho is the Assistant Director of the CNMS Core Facilities and manager of Keith R. Porter imaging facility. Dr. deCarvalho provides imaging expertise for both life and material science projects and has a particular interest in imaging bacteriophage. She teaches the upper-level laboratory “Microscopy and Imaging Techniques” course during winter semester and throughout the year works with undergraduate students from more than 25 institutions to image bacteriophage for the SEA-PHAGES program. Dr. deCarvalho also works at the intersection between art and science, and her award-winning images can be found in a textbook, the USPS “Life Magnified” series postage stamps and a NASA Science calendar.

Dr. Chaoya Han is the imaging facility research specialist. Dr. Han obtained his Ph.D. from University of Delaware in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His graduate research focused on designing in situ TEM experiments to characterize the complex atomic structures in rare-earth lean/free magnetic materials and reveal the fundamental reasons behind their magnetic properties through structural analysis. He also has experience working on ceramics for laser-induced damage research and semiconductor-based TEM studies.
